Event- Simulated Plane Crash on Garnet Peak, Peru, Massachusetts May 21, 2022

On Saturday, May 21, Peru FD will be hosting a mass casualty incident drill featuring a simulated plane crash on Garnet Peak in Peru. We ask that people please use extreme caution in the area of Curtin Road to East Main Road between the hours of 6:00AM and 1:00PM as there will be many ambulances and fire apparatus traveling in that area during that time. Note: the vehicles used during the drill will not be using emergency lights and sirens for the purpose of the drill. However, if emergency lights and sirens are seen being used, this is indicative of a real emergency and shall be treated as such. Please be patient with the increase of traffic. Also, depending on the weather, we will also have multiple helicopters landing and located near the Fire Station between 11:00AM and 1:00PM. Please use extreme caution while in the area of the Transfer Station and Fire Department during that time, keep as much distance as possible, and avoid loose items being blown by wind. This event is a drill only, but shall be treated in the same regard as a real emergency regarding the safety of those in the area. Please do not be alarmed by the increase of emergency vehicles and traffic while we conduct this drill.

History- On August 15 th , 1942, a Douglas C-53 military transport plane crashed on Garnet Peak killing 16 of the 19 members of the US Air Force.
Drill Overview


Date- Saturday May 21 st , 2022 (rain or shine)
06:00- Drill Prep time- Coffee – All Patients must be on site at the Peru Fire Station, DFS Rehab on
site with coffee
06:10- Safety briefing for patients
06:15- Moulage begins
06:30 Establish Communications at event site, staging area, fire station
06:45 Road crews cone work off areas on Curtain Road, activate sign boards
07:00 Test communications-event site, staging area, fire station
07:05- Patients transported to action area on Curtain Road, Hinsdale Rehab set up at staging area
07:30- All responders should be on site at the Peru Fire Station
07:45- Communications Overview and Safety briefing responders
08:00- Peru Fire Hinsdale fire and ambulance dispatched to a possible plane crash in the area of
Garnet Peak
08:10- mutual aid resources dispatched- resources dispatched from the fire station with pre-identified
time delays to scene from the Peru Fire Station.
08:20 Patients extricated, packaged and transported to the fire station, repeated until all patients clear
the scene.
11:00- drill concludes all units return to the fire station
11:15- hotwash, collect drill paperwork for review
11:45- Lunch at fire station
12:00 Life Star Helicopter landing at the fire station landing zone.

12:15- termination of drill
